When my son Billy was little I listened to all kinds and all genres of music.
A favorite of mine was The Carpenters. I thought Karen Carpenter’s voice was like velvet. So rich and beautiful. I would sing along and even sing a couple of her songs at karaoke. It’s been over 30 years since I sang karaoke!
I would play their song “Close to You “ I would sing it to Billy and change the words.
Close Yo You by The Carpenter’s
Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
Why do stars fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
On the day that you were born the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue
That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
On the day that you were born the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue
That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
Wa, close to you
Wa, close to you
Ha, close to you
La, close to you
I’d change the “Just like me “to “Just like Mommy”,and sing it to Billy when he was little.
“Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like mommy, they long to be
Close to you
Why do stars fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by?
Just like mommy, they long to be
Close to you
On the day that you were born the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue…
Billy was a towhead, he had very light blond almost white hair as a child and bright smiling blue eyes.

Jami was there with his brother that fateful night that Billy was murdered by a stranger.
Jame as I call him, has come a long way since that night. He will be getting married this fall and he’s now 27 years old. 2 years older than Billy was when his life was taken at 25.

I’m now raising Billy’s son Logan who is 13 years old. I got custody of him 7 years to the day that his Father was murdered. It’s a bittersweet day for sure.

Logan surprised me by singing along to George Straight a couple months ago. We blast it in our Jeep Wrangler and he sings “Here For A Good Time” because I told him the whole song reminds me of Daddy.
Especially the part that goes “ I’m not here for a long time, I’m here for a good time.” He wasn’t here very long but he was definitely here for a good time!
Always laughing and smiling and picking himself up by the boot straps when life got hard.
I still refer to Billy as Daddy because Logan was only 5 when his Father died.
God is always redeeming and restoring and that’s exactly what I believe is happening as I have the honor and privilege of raising Billy’s son.
